The first things to remember before you begin to use your paint sprayer: Don’t use a paint sprayer when the temperature is below 45 degrees or above 75 degrees. Be sure not to spray in direct sunlight. The heat will dry the paint too quickly and runs the risk of the paint not bonding well. The cold will dry the paint too slowly, attracting dirt and debris, and will likely cause the sprayer to clog with goopy paint. It is always best to do a few test runs on a spare piece of wood or other material until you feel comfortable with your spraying pattern and technique.

• Clear your work area of any tripping hazards.
• Protect any windows, trim and floors with masking tape and drop cloths respectively.
• Stir your paint well to help avoid clogging in your paint nozzle.
• Start moving your sprayer before you turn it on so there is not one big spot of color when you start. This will help you to achieve and even coating of paint.
• Keep the sprayer moving in long, straight strokes making sure to move as quickly as you would if you were brushing on the paint with a paint brush.
• Keep the nozzle about 10-12 inches away from the surface you are painting. Holding the nozzle closer than this makes the coating of paint much thicker and it can be uneven and drippy.
• Don’t tip the nozzle upwards or downwards as this can cause the nozzle to spit the paint.
• Paint corners first before moving to flat surfaces.
• Always remember to paint your first coat a little lightly. You can always add more paint if it isn’t the coverage you want, but you can’t take the paint away.

Airless spraying is an easy way to apply coatings, such as paints, sealants and stains. Airless spraying is much faster than brushing or rolling and the coating achieved is much more even and has a higher quality finish.
